By Dr. Kevin Thomas —
The Holy Spirit shapes us into disciples through the sacraments, prayer, study, and service (among other disciplines). Spiritual formation rarely happens until we apply our beliefs to real life situations through serving, whether it’s writing letters, making phone calls, teaching Sunday School, feeding a hungry person, or traveling as a missionary to a foreign country. Jesus calls us to follow. Doing what Jesus does is the path to discipleship.
Forest Lake has some great discipleship opportunities available. Please prayerfully consider whether God might be calling you to work in one of these ways.
Caring Ministries Coordinator
By serving in this capacity, you will work alongside a team of people to plan and implement the best ways for Forest Lake to care for people when they’ve lost a loved one. In the past, the church has often offered meals. You and your team might decide to continue the ministry in the same fashion, or you might decide to lead a different direction. Regardless of the method, you will be the hands and feet of Christ during the most difficult time in people’s lives.
Hospice of West Alabama Coordinator
Forest Lake has a long, strong history of working with Hospice of West Alabama. You’ve walked that difficult road with hundreds of families, and your presence has helped more than you realize. Beginning January 1, Forest Lake needs a new coordinator to work with Hospice in organizing our volunteers. Perhaps this is the way that God has chosen for you to make a difference.
Christmas Day Meals on Wheels Coordinator
What an expression of love! The holidays are a lonely time for many in our community. As a beautiful expression of the love of Christ, Forest Lake shows up on Christmas Day with a hot meal prepared in our kitchen for over 60 people in our community who rely on Meals on Wheels. We have lots of volunteers who are enriched by this ministry each year. Now, we’re searching for someone to take the lead. Maybe it’s your calling.
Pals Coordinator for UPES
Forest Lake’s ministry with University Place has flourished to the point where the Mission Team, with Nancy Campbell’s help, has decided to split leadership responsibilities into three areas. The church needs a coordinator for the Pals program. This person will need to maintain good communication with grade level leaders and reports their needs to our FLUM pal who will help to meet those needs. Serving in this role, you’ll be a great resource to our teachers.
On Wednesday, August 21, Forest Lake is hosting a volunteer/missions fair after the meal in the fellowship hall. If you lead an area of ministry or mission, please consider sharing your story and recruiting volunteers to help you accomplish Christ’s mission. If you’re ready to continue growing as a disciple and are looking for a place to serve, please visit with the various ministry exhibits. You might just hear God’s call.
