Outreach Update 8-4-17

Caring Days adult daycare center

The Communion Rail Offering this Sunday will go to Caring Days. This center provides a daycare for people with memory disorders, so they will have a safe place to stay during the week.

In July, the Mission Fund gave to our budgeted items: Jesus Way Homeless Shelter, Good Samaritan Clinic, and Weekday Kids scholarships for children in the Family Guidance Service. We also helped with a child’s funeral in the Tuscaloosa County School System, gave money for shoes for school aged children, gave money for Hope for My City Backpack Coalition (helping to provide backpacks), and helped people with their power bills and rent. Thank you for giving to missions.

The East Tuscaloosa Community Soup Bowl is having their annual fundraiser selling Boston Butts for $35 and hams for $45, prepared by Robertson’s Barbecue. The last date to order is Monday, Aug. 14; pick-up dates are either Sat., Aug 26 or Tues., Aug. 29. Please contact Carolyn Lindsey at (205) 292-9639 to order.

Our “Neighborhood Time” is on Wednesdays at 4 p.m. Our goal is to get to know our neighbors and have them get to know our church family. We will have lemonade, popsicles, pizza, music, games, water activities, and lots of conversations.

Back to School at University Place Elementary School – Students return to school on Aug. 8 and reading volunteers are needed. Reading volunteers work directly with students, typically helping struggling readers in lower grades practice reading aloud, learning sight words, etc. The UPES Reading Coordinator works with the teachers and volunteers to make assignments. Contact FLUM’s UPES liaison, Nancy Campbell, to learn more and/or sign up.

We continue to work on our vision of Working United, a residential center and work program helping people find a more stable life. We will attend the Funding and Sustainability Program at the University of Alabama on Aug. 17-18 and a coaching session on Aug. 21. If you would like to be a part of this training for Working United, please let us know.

Please join our church team for the 12th Annual “Vicki Kerr Walk To Remember” fundraiser for Caring Days, Aug. 26 at University Mall from 8 to 10 a.m. Caring Days is a daycare for adults with memory disorders. All donations are welcomed; if you donate $40 or more you will receive a T-shirt. The money raised goes to keeping the rates at half price for those who attend. Forest Lake United Methodist is putting together a gift basket for the raffle; we are asking each Sunday School class and small group of the church to please donate a $20 gift card for the basket. Please contact Beverly White for more information or the church office to sign up.

Our Christian Book Club will start on Sept. 11; we will meet on Mondays from 1-2:30 p.m. We open this class up to friends outside our church as well. We will study 25 Books Every Christian Should Read selected by Renovare and cover books such as The Divine Comedy, Revelations of Divine Love, The Philokalia, Dark Night of the Soul, and The Seven Storey Mountain. Please let the church office know if you will attend.

Over Christmas we are going with Filter of Hope on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic. Our college students are leading this trip. We are in the process of deciding which week is best. Please let us know if you are interested in attending. More information can be found at www.filterofhope.org.
