Here are a few of the missions we participate in around the world through the United Methodist Women… UMW are focusing on: economic inequality in the USA, raised $270,643 for missions in their national Day of Giving 2018, empowering women and girls in Latin America and the USA to break the cycle of violence and gender inequality, honoring teachers and veterans, helping people escape human trafficking through Hope for Justice, working for peace building in Tanganyika Conference where 630,000 people are displaced due to conflict between the Twa and the Bantu people. The United Methodist Women have a budget of $17 million. We are thrilled to have two strong UMW groups in our church. Please let us know if you would like more information on this ministry.

It is Christmas Shoe Box time for children in underdeveloped countries. We are making 29 shoe boxes. Please help us collect McDonald Toys. We are asking people to make a donation to this ministry, two people to volunteer to shop for the items, two people to box the shoe boxes, and someone to take the boxes to Decatur, AL. The items to purchase include Hot Wheels Cars, small dolls, soap, combs, toothbrushes, underwear, flip flops, small balls, and McDonald Toys.

Thank you to all the adults and children who are going visiting with us on Wednesdays. Our home-bound members love this time of year.

Working United is a ministry our church started with the Southwest District, other churches and agencies in town, to help people who are homeless find stable housing, employment and transportation. Kasey Perry and Travis Earnest are our first family to qualify for the assistance. We are thrilled to have our first rental house. Adam Tant, a local contractor and landlord, is working with us to provide rent for our first family at a discounted price. We are raising money to help with the rent each month to provide the family access to stable hous- ing. We are looking for people who are interested in being on the team to help Kasey and Travis. We are also collecting household items. Calvary Baptist Church provided a queen size mattress, love-seat, recliner, dresser, coffee table, end table, dining set, and lamps. Coker United Methodist Church provided a dryer, hutch, couch, a mattress and bed frame. Union Chapel UMC provided paper products, towels, pots and pans, utensils, linens and a microwave. Andrews Chapel UMC provided bowls, towels and paper products. Forest Lake UMC provided the rent assistance to start the lease. Adam Tant Construction and Celebrate Recovery remodeled the house. If you have a washer, used car, kitchen knives, a dresser, or canned goods, please let us know. If you would like to make a donation for the rent assistance, please earmark your donation to the church, “Working United”. Thank you

Forest Lake UMC is building The Phoenix House 3/4 house. Volunteer work days are Wednesday’s and Saturday’s. Thank you to everyone helping in this build. To sign up talk with Marvin McKinley to work on Wednesdays.

We have joined with the community to support Tuscaloosa Community Healing, Unity, and Reconciliation. This is a task force made up of groups to provide racial reconciliation through historical and contemporary awareness. Kevin, Melissa and Melody are part of this task force. The groups will meet monthly for 12 to 15 months. If you would like to consider joining one of the groups, the next meeting is July 16.

We will make sack lunches for the East Tuscaloosa Community Soup Bowl on July 22nd. Please see Carolyn Lindsey to sign up for making the sandwiches.

The West Alabama Quilters Guild is honoring our own Hallie O’Kelley with a permanent display of her quilting work. T-shirts have been made to raise money for the display. The shirts are $25. Stop by the church office and see the shirts with the pattern of her tree quilt. If you would like to purchase a shirt, please make your check out to FLUM Church and in the memo space write “Hallie.”
