Second Sunday of Easter

Call to Worship
Zac: Let us gather in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Kevin: Amen.
Zac: Thomas said:
Kevin: “Unless I see the mark of the nails and put my hand in his side, I will not believe.”
Zac: We are often skeptical people, driven by our senses, relying on that which we can hear, see
or prove.
Kevin: Our Lord asks us to see the invisible, to trust in the spirit, to have faith. Lord, give us
faith!
Zac: Sometimes we get carried away by our emotions, by wishful thinking and by popular
trends that pull us in.
Kevin: Lord, help us to be bold in our beliefs, but also careful as Thomas was. Move us beyond
mere trust in ordinary things and open our eyes for spiritual realities.
Zac: Jesus said: “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.”
Kevin: Amen.

Opening Hymn: Luvada & Hyunhee–Hail the Day That Sees Him Rise. #312 vs. 1, 2 & 3

1 Hail the day that sees him rise, Alleluia!
To his throne above the skies, Alleluia!
Christ, awhile to mortals given, Alleluia!
Reascends his native heaven, Alleluia!

2 There the glorious triumph waits, Alleluia!
Lift your heads, eternal gates, Alleluia!
Christ hath conquered death and sin, Alleluia!
Take the King of glory in, Alleluia!

3 See! the heaven its Lord receives, Alleluia!
Yet he loves the earth he leaves, Alleluia!
Though returning to his throne, Alleluia!
Still he calls the world his own, Alleluia!

Affirmation of Faith—The Apostle’s Creed—Zac
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried;*
the third day he rose from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic** church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Gloria Patri—Luvada & Hyunhee
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son:
and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be:
world without end. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer—Kevin
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name;
thy kingdom come; thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power,and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Psalter—Zac, Luvada, & Hyunhee (Page 837)
Response: O Praise the Lord, who delivers your soul from death.

1 I love the Lord, who has heard
my voice and my supplications,
2 and has inclined his ear to me,
whenever I called.
3 The snares of death encompassed me;
the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me;
I suffered distress and anguish.
4 Then I called on the name of the Lord:
“O Lord, I beseech you, save my life!”

Response: O Praise the Lord, who delivers your soul from death.

5 Gracious is the Lord, and righteous;
our God is merciful.
6 The Lord preserves the simple;
when I was brought low, The Lord saved me.
7 Return, O my soul, to your rest,
for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.
8 For you have delivered my soul from death,
my eyes from tears,
my feet from stumbling.
9 I walk before the Lord
in the land of the living.
10 I kept my faith, even when I said,
“I am greatly afflicted”;
11 I said in my consternation,
“All humans are a vain hope.”

Response: O Praise the Lord, who delivers your soul from death.

12 What shall I return to the Lord
for all my benefits?
13 I will lift up the cup of salvation
and call on the name of the Lord,
14 I will pay my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people.
15 Precious in the sight of the Lord
is the death of his faithful ones.
16 O Lord, I am your servant;
I am your servant, the child of your handmaid.
You have loosed my bonds.
17 I will offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving
and call on the name of the Lord.
18 I will pay my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people,
19 in the courts of the house of the Lord,
in your midst, O Jerusalem.
Praise the Lord!
Response: O Praise the Lord, who delivers your soul from death.

“We Shall Behold Him” by Dottie Rambo

Scripture Reading—Kevin
John 20:19-29
19 When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where
the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and
said, “Peace be with you.” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the
disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As
the Father has sent me, so I send you.” 22 When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to
them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you
retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
24 But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus
came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless
I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in
his side, I will not believe.”
26 A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the
doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then he
said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my
side. Do not doubt but believe.” 28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus
said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen
and yet have come to believe.”

Sermon—Kevin
